Greetings VYC members!
The Venice Yacht Club’s Charitable Foundation gave out two grants recently (in late April). One was to The Family Haven ($5,000) and one to the Venice Pregnancy Center ($2,500).

Each month going forward we will highlight one of the groups our Foundation supports so you can get to know them.

Spotlight on the Twig:
The Twig was the brainchild of Diane Weed, an adoptive mother herself. She envisioned a place where foster kids could shop without feeling they were getting the leftovers. So, the Twig opened its doors in 2016 off East Venice Avenue, offering a “boutique” experience where clothes, mostly new and lightly used, have tags and there are dressing rooms. And unlike many programs, teens and older foster kids are not left out. The organization has steadily expanded and is now open in Bradenton. Club and Foundation member Barbi Richardson has been volunteering at The Twig for several years: “It’s great to see the families’ faces light up as they come in and are greeted! Many are shopping for several children, often in tow, and this can be a daunting experience for anyone. It’s wonderful seeing the kids find clothes or shoes they’re thrilled with. Each leave with their selections folded with tissue paper and put in a bag with their own name. These little details make such a difference!” (For more information, check out their website at www.thetwigcares.com)

We have a few more grant checks to be given out to some more worthy organizations this summer, so stay tuned!

Appreciatively,
Barbi Richardson
