Venice Yacht Club Charitable Foundation

Greetings, this month I will touch on two VYCCF’s charities! I am happy to report that these worthy organizations, Jewish Family & Children’s Services (JFCS) and Family Haven of Catholic Charities, were each awarded $5,000, by the committee in April.


JFCS’s mission is guided by the Jewish tradition of helping all people to empower individuals and families toward self-sufficiency. It is committed to “a thriving future for our community where all members are cared for, safe and strong.” VYCCF’s donation is earmarked for Operation Military Family Program (OMAP) and Building Strong Families Homelessness Prevention Program. Additionally, many VYC members volunteer at the Homeless Veterans Stand Down each April in Sarasota where health, employment and counseling are a few of the services provided. Having volunteered on this day a few times, I can personally attest to its effect on so many! The committee this year also donated numerous personal hygiene items. JFCS continuously evaluates and responds to our community’s ever changing needs, and is committed to continuous improvement.

Family Haven’s mission is “to empower all in need by providing short-term and transitional housing to literally homeless families.” Its aim is to provide stability so that parents may work on a plan to achieve self-sufficiency. Two short-term houses are available in south Sarasota County area where everything needed for day-to-day living is supplied. Transitional housing is available for qualified families who have achieved their case management goals. Families may graduate to longer term housing based on availability, as well as their progress towards self-sufficiency. Case management plans are developed according to the needs of each family. The VYCCF is pleased to announce the appointment of Dave Slaman as a Co-Vice Chair. Dave led our very successful “Ride for a Better Community? and will become VYCCF Chair in fiscal year 2020.
