From VYC Currents - February 2022

On to February. It is hard to believe that December, January and all of their festivities are behind us. Let us hope for a healthy and happy 2022!

I would like to make a correction to my December Currents article. The grants made to the Venice Police Department’s Blue Santa Program and the YMCA’s SKY Academy were each $5,000 not $500.

As ambassadors to the Blue Santa Program, Debbie Staudt and I assisted in the distribution of gifts on Saturday morning, Dec.18, at our imposing new police station on East Venice Avenue. It was very well organized as the Venice Police Department had earlier reached out to our area and after schools, identified the families in need who created lists of their children’s Christmas wishes. The officers then, as volunteers, shopped and organized the gifts to be ready for distribution. Fifty-nine of our area families were given toys, games, clothing, and bicycles - many bicycles. Everyone was grateful and sincerely appreciative as we loaded the bags full of surprises and bicycles into cars, trucks, and vans. Yes, giving is good!

In 2022, the Venice Yacht Club will again be sponsoring a “Habitat For Humanity” house. This will be our eighth house. Club members will be donating 2,000 volunteer hours to the construction of this house. We will need volunteers, so please let us know if you can spare a couple of hours for this worthwhile cause.

We welcome our many new members to the Venice Yacht Club. If you have any interest in finding out more about what the Venice Yacht Club Charitable Foundation does, please contact me or anyone on our committee. We welcome any new ideas you may have.

We have several events planned for this year, beginning on the morning of Sunday, February 20, with our most successful fundraiser of the year, “Ride for a Better Community.” It is a fun bike ride around the city of Venice, followed by a great pancake breakfast at the Club. We hope you can ride with us, become a loop sponsor, a course monitor, or come and enjoy breakfast and the music after. Please see all the details in last month’s Currents or the VYCCF website.

With sincere appreciation,
Noni Lavelle
