From VYC Currents - December 2021

Holiday greetings. It is hard to fathom that our “ho ho ho”season is almost upon us. In keeping with this season of high spirits, VYCCF has many things to celebrate.

If you receive this Currents before the end of November, please visit the William H Jervey Public Library in downtown Venice. You can see the beautiful VYC display earmarking its long-standing relationship with the Venice community. It is in the first display case on the right as you enter.

Thanks to your generosity, the final report on our “Blues Bistro” event recorded approximately $7,500 in sponsorships and donations. We were thrilled with the crowd, the entertainment, and the returns. Thank you again to co-chairs Barbara Isaacson and Marty Wood.

Early in November, some members of our committee went to Tampa for the presentation of a $5000 grant and a tour at the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. This fine organization does so much for the families of our special ops veterans.

We really appreciated your support at our Donor Appreciation Even. Grant presentations of $500 each went to the YMCA’s Sky Academy, the Venice Police Department’s Blue Santa and Shop With A Cop programs. Sky Academy’s Principal Patricia Forcier accepted the grant and discussed the school’s focus based on research proving physical activity builds and conditions the brain for learning. With a 35% growth in student population over last year's enrollment, they are working diligently to continue to be an “A”.

Venice Police Department Captain Charlie Thorpe, MPO Paul Joyce, MPO Paul Freeman and their wives were present.. Captain Thorpe will become the new VPD Chief in 2022; congratulations to him. MPO Paul Joyce discussed the Shop With A Cop Program and explained its impact on needy children in our community. The Blue Santa Program was presented by MPO Paul Freeman. Our thanks to the evening’s Chair Beth Piel and her committee Cheryl Cook and Bob Scholten for a job well done.

In the spirit of Christmas, we have made a $1,000 donation to Wreaths Across America. They reached out requesting funding for wreaths that will be placed at the Sarasota National Cemetery.

Please mark Sunday, Feb. 20, on your calendars now for our 5th Annual Ride for a Better Community! This is our major fundraiser of the year. We need your support either by forming a team, supporting those who are riding, or being a general sponsor. Thank you in advance.

Wishing you and yours a joyous, safe, and healthy holiday season!

With sincere appreciation,
Noni Lavelle
