From VYC Currents - March 2013

This month’s column highlights our recent grant to Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County to fund educational brochures for a new initiative, Veterans Build. Dewey Snowden and Michael Nemser met Judy Wilcox, Executive Director and VYC member, to review the project. Habitat, in partnership with local veteran outreach organizations, is recruiting a local veteran family in need to be housed within the new Habitat community of six, single-family homes in Laurel.

Over 1.5 million veteran households pay more than 50% of income for housing, a severe cost burden, despite having access to VA loans and other assistance. Veterans Build will provide a simple, decent and affordable housing solution for a local veteran family by mobilizing military members, veterans groups and all military supporters in the program. The infrastructure is currently being established and the build will begin mid-year. Judy advised that South Sarasota County Habitat just completed the 90th home build in their 20 years here. She adds a thanks to the VYCCF for its support and invites VYC members to work on the house build. We are proud to be able to support Habitat.

Michael Nemser The next grant cycles closes on May 1. You are encouraged to submit grant applications on behalf of your favorite local charities that support youth boating, health and education, veterans and active military, and the environment.
